You Don't Get Stronger at the Gym

You don’t get stronger in the gym.

You get stronger when you rest.

Rest and Recovery are perhaps the most ignored part of fitness. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to talk to people (young people especially) out of their 2 hours in the gym 6-7 days/week scheduled in order to get the rest they need to get the results they really want.

There’s so much fear about losing their “gains”.

Well, let me tell you if you’re pushing that hard in the gym, all you’re going to gain is injury or illness.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to rehabilitate people who had the “no pain, no gain” attitude and drove themselves into the ground at the gym.

Here is something to think about: If you are not seeing the results you want in the gym, don’t jam more workouts in…don’t try the latest fad workout…don’t try the latest fitness gadget.

REST.

Your body will thank you.

However, that does not mean do nothing.

Think of ways to keep moving but without putting too much stress on the body. I like to call it active recovery! Go for a walk and get the blood pumping. Find activities that are enjoyable, especially since the gym is not an option for most people. Rest doesn't mean stop, it just means find a new outlet to feel good!

If your workouts leave you feeling amazing, you will feel amazing. If your workouts leave you feeling dead on the floor and not being able to move, then well, thats how you are going to feel. Learn to listen to what your body is telling you.
