Reframing the Approach: The Secret to Successful Client Outcomes

Hot take…

People don't inherently want physical therapy.

This realization isn't a dismissal of our profession's value but rather a pivotal insight into our client's mindset.

As practitioners, it's vital to acknowledge that, much like a clogged toilet or a broken car, physical therapy is often a “grudge purchase.” Most clients aren't eagerly signing up; they're addressing a need, sometimes reluctantly.

Understanding this allows us to meet our clients where they are. It challenges us to shift our perspective from selling our service to collaborating on a shared vision of wellness and achievement, aligning our treatment plans with the client’s personal goals and the functionality they wish to regain.

This shift in perspective is a game-changer.

It requires us to reframe our approach, seeing ourselves not as sellers of a service but as facilitators of a desired outcome. When we tune into the fact that clients are seeking the results that physical therapy can provide—playing with their kids pain-free, enjoying sports without injury, living daily life without discomfort—we begin to communicate and engage with them on a more profound level.

Remember, it's not about selling physical therapy; it's about connecting the dots between what we can do for the client, and the client's aspirations. It's about being the best person to guide them back to their passions and activities.

When clients see that we understand and are committed to their goals, that's when we achieve the most meaningful and lasting results.
